Description

This is a recolored echellogram using the BACHES echelle spectrograph from Baader Planetarium of V1405 Cas, which has been discovered recently.

This spectrum exhibits the special P Cygni spectral features, which are often detected when observing supernovae, planetary nebulae, and of course novae.

They result from the expanding shell surrounding the double star system, that - on one hand - absorbs the light in the line of sight of the central star and - on the other hand - also scatters the light of the star(s) in the non-line of sight regions at this specific wavelength towards an observer on earth.

The final result is a broad emission line, superimposed with a blue-shifted absorption line.

One can also see the sodium doublet very clearly. These result, among other sources (e.g. one of the companions in that system), also from the interstellar medium that lies in the line of sight. The nova itself lies nicely in the galactic disk and thus shows, due to its great distance to earth, also absorption in the spectrum of neutral sodium.

This image has been recolored (arbitrarily), meaning the original image was taken with a mono sensor. The rest of the coloring process itself was carried out with Photoshop etc.

I found this very interesting since this is another point of view on this special nova.

I'm very excited about how this nova is evolving over time.

Clear skies everone,

Florian
